05/05/2015: Regulation of Alarms and Monitoring Devices

This is a reminder of Chapter 110, Article III of the Code of the Village of Akron.

The Village Board recognizes the value of alarms and monitoring devices in protecting structures from intrusion, fire and other hazards.  The fire department and emergency services have advised the board that there are many unnecessary calls made because of malfunctions of these devices.  Such call outs expose our emergency responders to unnecessary hazards.

It is unlawful for any person to allow the transmission from an alarm system that is the result of mechanical failure, malfunction, improper installation or negligence of the user for the transmission from an alarm system where the event triggering the alarm is not a bona fide emergency and such alarm results in a response from the fire department or emergency services.

All avoidable alarms are registered with the Central Fire Alarm Office and reported to the Village of Akron Code Enforcement Officer who shall have the authority to investigate such violations, keep records of such violations, send notices of violations and impose civil penalties.

If within the same calendar year, a person shall violate this law the penalties shall be:

1st Offense:  Warning Letter

2nd Offense:  Civil Penalty of $50.00

3rd Offense:  Civil Penalty of $100.00

4th Offense:  Civil Penalty of $300.00

5th or Subsequent Event:  Civil Penalty of $500.00

A civil penalty must be paid or appealed within 30 days of the issuance of the penalty.
