09/08/2016: Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking

Town Hall Meeting Notice

The Akron Nrewstead Community Coalition (ANCC) and the C. Dee Wright Center invite you to the premier of the Wright Kids' public service films on underage drinking.  The event will be hosted at the Newstead Town Hall located at 5 Clarence Center Road on Thursday September 22, 2016 at 7:00 PM.  Adults and youth are invited to attend.

The Wright Kids of the summer program at the C. Dee Wright Center worked to create their own public service films on underage drinking with the help of Gary Sundown and Rebecca Parker.  Gary Sundown is the award winning director of Bury My Heart With Tonawanda.  He is a decendant of the Seneca Nation and lives with his family in Western New York.  Rebecca Parker started working for the Tonawanda Seneca Nation in 2010 developing programs to aid the community.  Her work includes developing a respite program for the elderly, a school supply program, an assistance program to help combat the rising cost of winter heating, as well as developing a multimedia program for high school and college students.

The Tonawanda Seneca Council of Chiefs had a strong commitment to hearing the collective voice of the youth.  This revelation resulted in the production of several short public service announcements on topics relevant to the everyday lives of our youth.

These short videos can be found at:

Working with professional gave students the chance to expand their skills and passions.  the focus on underage drinking provided an educational experience for the teens while also creating a vessel for their perspective to be captured and shared with the entire community.

Sheriff Aaron Naegely of the Erie County Sheriff's Office and Mrs. Patricia Reeves (who lost a daughter to a drunk driver) will also be there to present.

The SAMSHA - Underage Drinking Prevention and Education Initiative awarded the Akron Newstead Community Coalition Town Hall initiative earlier this year.

This is a FREE event with refreshments provided.  Please be sure to arrive on time as to not disrupt the film screening and presentations.

The ANCC is a community-based organization dedicated to enhancing positive opportunities for all residents, particularly the youth of Akron/Newstead, in order to support a healthy lifestyle.  To learn more about the Akron Newstead Community Coalition, see the Facebook page at or check out
