FREE RABIES VACCINATION CLINICS

FOR DOGS, CATS & FERRETS

Locations Scheduled in May for West Seneca, Tonawanda and Buffalo, and in September for ECC South, ECC North and Cheektowaga

Erie County has announced six upcoming rabies vaccination clinics offered by the Erie County Department of Health. These free clinics in May and September give family pets protection from rabies, which is a fatal disease for humans and animals. Erie County’s Division of Environmental Health manages the county’s rabies control program, responses to rabid or potentially rabid animals, and these free clinics for county residents. “Our department vaccinated more than 4,000 pets in 2018,” said Dr. Burstein. These vaccinations protect humans and domesticated animals alike, the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society, Medaille College’s Veterinary Technology Program and the SPCA Serving Erie County are assisting in these clinics.

Bats, raccoons, fox and skunks can enter homes, barns and sheds undetected. Pets, including “indoor” and “outdoor” cats, are at risk for rabies exposure inside and outside the home. In 2018, the Division of Environmental Health identified 21 animals in Erie County that tested positive for rabies. “Call the Erie County Department of Health at 716-961-6800 if you or your pet have been exposed to any wild animal, or have been bitten by a dog, cat or wild animal,” said Senior Public Health Sanitarian Peter Tripi. “If there is the smallest chance that you, a loved one or a pet have been exposed, we want to talk to you about your risk of exposure.”

 Checklist for Clinics:

  • Bring your pet on a secure collar/harness and leash, or in a pet carrier
  • Avoid using retractable or extended leashes
  • Bring a copy of your pet’s vaccination record, if possible
