Burke gets broadband funding approved

Today the Erie County Legislature took the first tangible step towards municipal broadband by approving the funding of a feasibility study. A county broadband system would be the first of its kind in New York State and the cost of the network could potentially be offset by New York State Broadband funds.

Legislator Patrick B. Burke has been at the forefront of increasing broadband internet access for county residents since entering office in January of 2014. His efforts led to the formation of the Erie County Municipal Broadband Committee and the release of a policy document outlining the service gaps in Erie County’s broadband infrastructure. The document also advised the County Executive to pursue a feasibility study to discover available fiber cable assets and to determine the County Broadband Project’s scope.

“Consumers, businesses, schools and government agencies need to have affordable and accessible high speed internet service in order to function in today’s world; the build out of a fiber cable network is a no-brainer. This is a win for social justice, economic development and public safety.”

The County can now move forward with an RFP process while it tries to position itself for competitive New York State Broadband Funds.
