BURKE LOOKS FOR STATE SUPPORT IN ADVANCING LOCAL BROADBAND INITIATIVE

ERIE COUNTY, NY- Since entering office in 2013, Erie County Legislator Patrick B. Burke (District 7) has worked to increase the access, speed and affordability of broadband internet for residents and businesses in Erie County. He hopes Governor Cuomo's broadband announcement today at 3pm will bring welcome news for Erie County residents.

“For the past three years I have been working with numerous community and governmental partners to advance broadband service in Erie County. For our region's economic renaissance to continue, we have to increase our connectivity; the expansion of fiber internet will happen at some point in our future but the longer we wait, the more it will cost us.” said Burke. “Every generation has had major building projects to facilitate transportation and connectivity. We dug canals, built railroads, built highways and telephone lines all so people could be interconnected. In today's world, we communicate through the internet. Our residents, schools, local governments and businesses rely on fast and accessible internet on a daily basis. It was Governor Clinton who brought us the Erie Canal which changed the course of Buffalo's future, it is my hope that Governor Cuomo will bring us the highest quality internet in the country so that Buffalo can once again be an economic hub."

Erie County and Legislator Burke will continue moving forward with ECC Technologies to assess the current availability of local fiber assets. The creation of a broadband network would greatly benefit residents, businesses and various other organizations that call Erie County home.
