Burke Submits Honeybee Protection Act

Erie County Legislator Pat Burke has submitted the Honey Bee Protection Act to the Erie County Legislature. Modeled after similar legislation from Maryland, the Honey Bee Protection Act would prohibit the consumer use of insecticides that have been linked to the decline in honeybee populations as well as other pollinating insects.

“This is yet another example of common sense legislation that improves public health and safety. Bees and other pollinating insects are central to food production. If there are no bees to pollinate, then there is no food, there are no flowers, and so many of the things that make life sustainable and enjoyable would be gone” said Legislator Burke.

Since entering office, Burke has aggressively set policy in Erie County that protects the environment and public health. In 2015, his legislation banning plastic micro-beads was signed into law and later that year; his bill creating youth concussion protocol requirements was passed. Both bills had bipartisan support.

“I seek common ground with my colleagues. I was fortunate to have Chairman Mills as a cosponsor to the plastic micro-beads ban and then to have Majority Leader Lorigo as the cosponsor to the Concussion Law. The people want to see us working together and while we may disagree on many things, we have a duty to put the public’s interest first. I look forward to working on this legislation with colleagues on both sides of the aisle.”
