BURKE SUPPORTS IDA REFORM TO ENSURE STRONGER ECONOMY
There is no future economy for Buffalo without Amherst, Burke Says

Buffalo, NY
– Erie County Legislature voted 9 to 2, to pass a resolution in opposition to Governor Cuomo’s IDA reform introduced in the 2015 budget. Governor Cuomo’s reforms would place another level of oversight on deals made by local IDA’s across the State, which could delay some projects. However, local IDA’s have a long history of poaching businesses from other municipalities in the region, sell the tax base out from underneath school districts without checks and balances, often fail to hold businesses to job creation goals, and needlessly creates competition between towns and cities in the region that costs taxpayers money.

“New York State needs to pass comprehensive IDA reform that allows for effective regional coordination of economic development.  There is no future for Buffalo without Amherst, and no future for Cheektowaga without Lancaster.  We need every city, town, and village rowing in the same direction if we are going to ensure a stronger economy for Erie County,” said Legislator Burke.

The resolution, introduced by Legislator Rath of Amherst, gives uncritical support to local IDA’s in spite of numerous instances where they operated outside of the interests of the taxpayer, saying that the Legislature “continues to support our local IDAs and endorses their activities unburdened by additional State regulations and mandates.”
