Buffalo, N.Y. – Erie County 7th District Legislator Patrick B. Burke (D-Buffalo) sponsored a public forum for the candidates of the three at large seats in the May 6th Buffalo School Board Election on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Southside Elementary School in South Buffalo. The forum included 12 of the 15 candidates and at least 70 local residents. The 90 minute discussion covered several topics including charter schools, physical education compliance and the challenges of poverty in the Buffalo Public Schools.
Legislator Burke said the following about the event, "The Buffalo Public Schools are in a crisis and three of these candidates will determine what direction our schools will go in. As an Erie County Legislator, I have no role in the governing process of our schools but as a community leader and father of children in the school system, I feel a responsibility to contribute to this incredibly important discussion. I hope this forum allowed these candidates to articulate their platforms to the voters and I hope the voters have found this forum helpful in determining who best represents their interests."
The forum was moderated by Nick Mendola and the panelists for the event were Claudine Ewing of Channel 2 News, Phil Haberstro of The Buffalo Wellness Institute, and Buffalo State College English Education Program Professor Jim Cercone.
