Erie County Recognizes May 1st as International Worker's Day

Erie County Legislator Patrick Burke submitted a resolution, which was approved, to recognize May 1st as International Workers Day in Erie County. May 1st, or May Day as it is more commonly known, signifies the struggle for the eight hour workday in the 19th century. Workers organized into unions to fight against a sixteen hour working day as well as unsafe working conditions. On May 1st 1886, the first May Day celebration motivated 300,000 workers and 13,000 businesses to walk off of their jobs while 40,000 went on strike. The fight for an eight hour workday led to a greater social revolution and a drastic change in economic structure.
