Legislator Burke Announces Unprecedented Opioid Epidemic Funding Proposal

Erie County, New York- In order to further combat the severity of the ongoing opioid epidemic, Legislator Patrick Burke is proposing a measure that would take an additional $1 million from the county fund balance, which currently stands at almost $90 million, and transfer it to the Erie County Department of Health.

This in light of the recent event on March 30th in which it was reported seven people had died within 24 hours from drug overdoses. The 2017 weekly average for opioid deaths in Erie County is 6.8 deaths per week. In one day a week’s worth of damage was done.

“Erie County has been hit especially hard by the opioid epidemic. It affects all people regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or zip code. We need to ensure that anyone who seeks treatment isn’t left waiting. The epidemic isn’t waiting, and we as elected officials charged with ensuring public safety cannot wait. I have submitted a resolution before the legislature that has been co-sponsored by my Democratic colleagues. I hope my colleagues from across the aisle will join me in ensuring this crisis is being dealt with, with the full and complete resources Erie County has to throw at it.”
