LEGISLATOR BURKE CALLS FOR HIEGHTENED SAFETY MEASURES AT WALDEN AND HARLEM INTERSECTION FOLLOWING SECOND FATAL ACCIDENT

Cheektowaga, NY –Legislator Patrick B. Burke (D – Buffalo) is calling on the New York State Department of Transportation to take immediate action following a fatal accident at the intersection of Harlem Road and Walden Avenue in the Town of Cheektowaga; this is the second fatality within the past year at this intersection involving a pedestrian and motor vehicle.

“We can no longer ignore the serious danger this crossing poses to pedestrians and motorists. These accidents are not a coincidence, poor planning and design has made this intersection perilous for all commuters especially those traveling on foot or bicycle.” Said Legislator Burke

Legislator Burke has submitted a resolution to the Erie County Legislature outlining some of the preventative measures that should be taken to increase pedestrian safety; he will ask his Legislative colleagues for immediate consideration and approval on the item. The resolution calls for clearly marked bike and walking lanes, a safety island for pedestrians, a longer delay in left turn green lights and higher visibility traffic and speed signs.  Legislator Burke has also started an online petition calling for the State and Town to implement these safety precautions.  The petition can be accessed at www2.erie.gov/burke/ or by calling his office to be put on the petition at 858-8480, please leave name and address when calling.
