Legislator Burke Introduces School Bus Safety Legislation

ERIE COUNTY, NY- Today Erie County Legislator Patrick B. Burke (D-7th District) introduced the Erie County School Bus Safety Law. The law is intended to bridge the caregiver gap found on k-8 school buses. Over the past year, there have been several instances of school bus assault and school bus injuries due to a lack of oversight. There is no other place where children are void of supervision like they are on school buses.

“I’m a parent of three children so I understand the concern others feel about leaving their children unattended on a school bus. The cases of sexual assault last year and the tragedy that happened recently in Springville are an unfortunate reminder that there isn’t enough being done to keep our children from harm.” said Burke. “Why is being on a school bus any different than being in school? Children are required to have at least one supervisor with them in the classroom. This gap in caregiver services is unacceptable.”

Student to teacher ratios within the classroom range from 25 to 35 students per teacher, yet on a school bus there is rarely a supervisor aside from the driver. A driver cannot be expected to devote their attention to the road and a group of children simultaneously. This law is intended create a safe environment for children as they travel to and from school.
