Legislator Pat Burke Requests Hearing on Animal Abuse Registry

ERIE COUNTY, NY- Recently media attention has been directed toward the drawn out legal battle between Beth Hoskins, the focus of the Erie County SPCA’s largest raid in its history, and the Erie County SPCA. The revived interest in the five year long Beth Hoskins case has highlighted a forgotten issue. Local Law 5-1, to establish an Erie County Animal Abuse registry, has been languishing in the Erie County Legislature’s committee on Energy and Environment for nearly a year.

In this time five counties in New York State passed laws establishing animal abuse registries; Orange County, Rockland County, Nassau County, Albany County and most recently, neighboring Niagara County.

“Every year we see new cases of extreme neglect or abuse, and each year we are just as shocked and disturbed. Whether it’s the high school students torturing a turtle in Akron or Hoskins’ being convicted of fifty-two cases of animal cruelty, laws like this one can help make sure that animals remain in proper care” said lead sponsor of the local law Erie County Legislator Patrick Burke (7th District). “The recent cases of animal cruelty depicted in the media combined with the passage of local laws establishing animal abuse registries in other counties in New York State, a public hearing on this matter is long overdue.”

Burke has officially requested that a public hearing be held on Local Law 5-1 within the next two weeks for the purpose of expediency.
