As part of several proposed revisions to the Erie County Charter, the Legislature approved an independent commission’s recommendation to revise how any future salary increase for a county elected official would occur. In the approved recommendation, salary increases can only take effect after the current term ends.
“Salary increases for elected officials are upon recommendation from an independent salary review commission, but no matter their recommendation in the future, elected officials shouldn’t see any increases till after conclusion of their current term. This is a simple change that brings more accountability to the process,” said Legislator Ted Morton. “While I personally do not support salary increases for elected officials, having this Charter revision is necessary.”
The recommendation, approved 11-0 by the Legislature, will become part of a local law that will be on the November 2016 ballot for voter approval.
