Legislature adopts 2016 budget, delivers second consecutive tax decrease

The Erie County Legislature’s Majority Caucus announces that the 2016 budget was adopted at today’s annual budget meeting with a tax decrease. The Majority Caucus’s amendments resulted in a reduced tax rate, while funding programs and services that are critical to the county’s function.

“For the second consecutive year the Legislature’s Majority Caucus has delivered a tax decrease to residents. I am proud of the work done by the Legislature to identify areas where we can save costs and reprioritize funding to support critical services, including public safety, road work and other vital departments. The Legislature also ensured that the county’s longstanding partnership with various service and cultural organizations continued in support of making Erie County a great place to live and work,” said Chairman John Mills.

“Providing a tax decrease was among the top priorities of the Majority Caucus, and we worked for the past month to ensure that happened. The 2016 budget funds services and programs and will ensure that Erie County can meet the needs of residents. Approving a tax decrease for the second year is a great first step in revitalizing our county, which has been burdened for far too long with some of the highest taxes in the nation. I expect that under the Majority Caucus’ leadership that trend will continue,” said Majority Leader Joseph Lorigo, Chairman of the Legislature’s Budget Committee.

The Legislature urges the County Executive to support the adopted 2016 budget in the best interests of taxpayers and the county as a whole.
