Legislature designates June 15th as ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ in Erie County

During last Thursday’s session, the Erie County Legislature voted unanimously in favor of recognizing June 15th as ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ in Erie County.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The National Center on Elder Abuse defines elder abuse as the mistreatment or harming of an older person. It can include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, along with neglect and financial exploitation. It is estimated that 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced abuse.

“Elder abuse is a serious problem and it is unfortunately unreported in many cases,” said Legislator Lynne Dixon. “It is important to raise awareness of this issue in order to protect older adults and encourage those who suspect abuse to take proper action.”

“Elder abuse and neglect is an injustice that cannot be tolerated,” said Legislator Joe Lorigo. “This day is an opportunity to create awareness in hopes of preventing cases of abuse moving forward. It is also important to recognize the groups here in Erie County for their continued efforts to address this problem and provide outstanding care for seniors throughout our community.”

In Erie County, cases of elder abuse can be reported by contacting Adult Protective Services at (716) 858-6877.
