During last Thursday’s session, the Erie County Legislature unanimously passed a resolution urging Governor Cuomo to sign the Rural and Agricultural Jobs Act.  The act would create a $100 million fund using private investment induced by tax credits for small businesses involved in the manufacturing, processing, or marketing of agricultural products, aquatic products and farm supplies.

“Far too often economic development is overlooked in rural communities, with small agricultural businesses not receiving adequate funding or inducements,” said Legislator Ed Rath.  “Unfortunately, according to the census bureau, from 2012-2016, sixty percent of New York’s rural communities saw more businesses close than open. Those businesses deserve the financial support needed for economic development and growth to continue improving our region.”

“It is important to support business development in rural communities,” said Legislator John Mills. “I urge the governor to sign this legislation to help small businesses expand, including the many great ones we have in Upstate New York.”

“Small businesses and farms in rural and Upstate New York are an important part of our communities and deserve financial support,” said Legislator Lynne Dixon.  “The act would use private funding to help those businesses grow throughout our region.”

“There are many great businesses in the district I represent that would directly benefit from this type of investment,” said Legislator Joe Lorigo. “Unfortunately, many of these businesses have been stifled by high taxes and population decline. I urge the governor to sign the Rural and Agricultural Jobs Act to support those hard-working business owners who deserve financial support to help them grow and expand.”
