Legislature supports change to Charter to further remove politics from government

Erie County Legislature Chairman John Mills is pleased to announce that the Legislature has approved the independent Charter Review Commission’s recommendation to revise how budget is divided among the Majority and Minority Caucuses of the Legislature. As Chairman he has focused on bringing fairness and efficiency to the Legislature and is pleased the approach he has implemented is one step closer to being a permanent part of the Charter.

“In the past, the Legislature budget was improperly used as a bargaining tool to gain favor. I support this measure to ensure that no matter which party is in the majority that all Legislators who are doing the work of the people have the resources they need to get this job done. Funding for office supplies should not have to come at a higher cost or be influenced by politics. This revision allows fair distribution of funding and allows each caucus to control their funds without interference,” said Chairman Mills. “I am pleased that we are already following this procedure and that it will now also be dictated by the Charter.”

The recommendation, approved 11-0 by the Legislature, will become part of a local law that will be on the November 2016 ballot for voter approval.
