On January 25, Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon sent a letter requesting a draft of legislation be submitted to the Legislature that would allow furloughed federal employees affected by the government shutdown a temporary extension to pay their 2019 property taxes. The shutdown, the longest in United States history, lasted a total of 35-days. The Erie County Department of Real Property Tax Services granted Legislator Dixon’s request and submitted a resolution to the Legislature which will be up for approval Thursday. A copy of that resolution can be found here.

“I would like to thank Director Maciejewski and the Department of Real Property Tax Services for responding to my request in such a timely manner and moving to provide some relief for furloughed government employees here in Erie County,” said Legislator Dixon. “I look forward to passing this resolution with the support of my colleagues during this week’s session.”

The extension would extend the interest-free period to pay Erie County property taxes by 90 days for furloughed employees.  The state Legislature passed a bill (A881/S1675) authorizing local governments to extend the deadline for property taxes, with no penalties or interest, for qualifying residents until 90 days after the shutdown ends. The bill was signed by Governor Cuomo February 1, but requires Erie County to pass a resolution in order to grant the extension. A copy of Legislator Dixon’s letter is here.
