Erie County Legislator Chris Greene recognized Akron High School Senior Annie Leeds as the Erie County Legislature’s Citizen of the Month and presented her a proclamation in Legislative Chambers.

Annie is a 17-year-old who lives with Mitochondrial Disease—a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to produce sufficient energy to function properly. Because of her disease, Annie receives lengthy treatments at Oishei Children’s Hospital.

Annie doesn’t let her Disease slow her down—she has been active in school musicals, is a member of the Akron High School Track team and Annie is an active participant in the Market on Main Street Initiative where she sells her homemade bracelets and receives real-world business experience. With the proceeds from the sales of her bracelets, Annie created the “Annie Leeds Adventure Fund” which has donated more than $15,000 to Oishei Children’s Hospital so other chronically ill children can enjoy a day of fun and activities outside of the hospital.

Legislator Greene said, “I want to thank Annie for her contributions to our community. The courage this young woman demonstrates in the face of so many challenges each day is truly inspirational and I am honored I had the chance to meet such an outstanding individual. I wish Annie the best of health and success in all of her future endeavors.”
