Erie County Legislator John Mills recently honored Erie County Sheriff’s Detective Daniel Walczak who is credited for saving an Orchard Park man’s life.

On April 8, 2021, Daniel Walczak identified a residential shed fire and grass fire and an elderly man in distress. Walczak went through the fire to rescue the man on the ground who was semi-conscious, immobile and surrounded by flames. In doing so, he was able to drag the man away from the fire toward safety. Walczak eventually had help from Orchard Park Police Captain Greg Sheppard and Hillcrest Fireman Tim Gibbons.

Daniel Walczak began his career with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office in 2003 and participated in the FBI’s Hazardous Devices School and became the Commander of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad in 2007. He is also a member of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and a veteran of the United States Army. Legislator Mills said, “Daniel Walczak is the definition of courage and bravery. Because of his quick thinking and selfless service an elderly man was saved from the flames. Thank you, Mr. Walczak, for your continued commitment and dedication to your profession.”
