Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro recently honored Stony Brook Shines for Others which was created after the October 2006 snowstorm and the damages it had done to the Western New York community.  The Stony Brook neighborhood in Lancaster had minimal storm damage which is what inspired Jennifer and Harry Chomen to give back to the community in need.

Stony Brook Shines for Others is now an annual tradition where 300 homes across nine streets transform the neighborhood into a winter wonderland from Thanksgiving night to New Year’s Day. Pedestrians are able to walk through colorfully lit archways that line the sidewalks.

The holiday display is free of charge, but donations are greatly appreciated and are given to local charities. Over the years, Stony Brook Shines for Others has raised more than $229,777 for charities like Make-A-Wish of WNY, Carly’s Club, The Kevin Guest House and many more. This past holiday, they donated $73,420 to WNY Heroes which is the most they have raised in a single season.

Legislator Todaro said, “Incredible. What started out as a simple idea has turned into something no one could have ever imagined. For many, this is an annual holiday tradition where families make new memories from year to year, and for local charities it is a welcomed donation that goes toward their mission of giving back to those in need. Thank you to the Chomen family, the participants in the Stony Brook neighborhood and to all those who donated throughout the years. This  is truly an amazing and heart-warming story.”
