Today, Legislator Lynne Dixon attempted to force a vote in the Erie County Legislature on her legislation opposing a 5-cent tax on consumers who choose to use paper bags, which was introduced April 2nd. The state-wide ban of plastic bags passed in April contained a provision allowing local governments to opt in, or out, of initiating the tax. County Executive Mark Poloncarz has stated he is in favor of the tax, “It’s (the tax) there as an incentive to get people to use reusable bags”, Poloncarz told the Buffalo News in April.

To date, no Democratic Legislators who blocked the effort to vote on the legislation today have made public comment on whether they support or oppose the tax.County Legislators across the state have voiced opposition to the 5-cent tax including legislators in largely populated counties like Monroe, Niagara, and Nassau counties.

“It’s just another tax on Erie County residents, and it especially will hurt those with lower income levels or fixed incomes like our seniors. Residents are already being nickeled and dimed by county government and it needs to stop,” said Legislator Lynne Dixon.

“Legislatures across the state are coming out either in favor or opposed to this tax. Under the current Erie County Legislature majority, important topics are simply buried in committee in the hope that people don’t notice. It’s our job as Legislators to let our constituents know where we stand on issues. I’m opposed to this tax—enough is enough—New York State and Erie County have some of highest taxes in nation. When does it stop?” said Legislator Joe Lorigo.
