Legislature approves 5-year body camera program for Erie County Sheriff’s Office

At Thursday’s session, the Erie County Legislature unanimously approved a 5-year body camera program to soon be rolled out within the Erie County Sheriff’s office. The funding approved is not to exceed $1,659,253 for the next five years and will include 209 body cameras supplied by AXON.

Legislator Lorigo said, “This is an initiative my colleagues and I have supported following many discussions at the Legislature. I look forward to getting the program underway in an effort to increase transparency and accountability within the Sheriff’s office.”

Legislator Dixon said, “This has been a lengthy process, as we have been working to get this program up and running for over several months. My colleagues and I are proud to support this initiative to increase public safety and accountability. Thank you to the Sheriff’s office and my colleagues in the Legislature for working together to get this done.”

Legislator Rath said, “Body cameras are a worthy public safety initiative. We have discussed this topic at length at the Legislature in recent months and I am proud to offer my support.”

Legislator Mills said, “I am glad my colleagues and I have worked with the sheriff’s office to make body cameras a priority. This is an agreement that will increase safety among employees within the Sheriff’s office and members of the public.”
