During last Thursday’s session, the Erie County Legislature unanimously passed a resolution in remembrance of former State Senator and champion of small business Walter J. Floss Jr., who died December 8, 2018 at the age of 95.

Sen. Floss, born in Buffalo, attended Public School 74 before enlisting in the Naval Reserve. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 and opened Floss Insurance Agency in Clarence when he returned. He went on to hold many offices, including serving on the Clarence Town Council, Clarence Town Planning Board and Erie County Legislature before he was elected as State Senator in 1978. During his 10 years in the State Senate, he served on many task forces, legislative commissions and senate standing committees, mostly with a focus on financial and business topics.

“On behalf of the Erie County Legislature, I extend my deepest sympathies to Senator Walter Floss Jr.’s friends and family, said Legislator Ed Rath. “His many contributions to the Clarence community and outspoken support of small businesses will be fondly remembered.”

Sen. Floss is survived by 10 children, 30 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. A copy of the resolution can be found here.
