The Erie County Legislature unanimously supported a resolution in favor of state legislation urging Governor Cuomo to remove the fee associated with receiving a new license plate.

Under the Governor’s proposal, beginning in April 2020, New York State motorists who have blue and white Empire State plates will be required to replace them when renewing a registration and pay a $25 dollar fee. Senate Bill 66663 was introduced by State Senator Rob Ortt (R-North Tonawanda) in opposition.

Legislator Lorigo said, “This is another typical money grab out of Albany. Our resolution calls on the governor to remove the fee entirely instead of placing another financial burden on already overtaxed residents of New York State.”

Legislator Rath said, “Not only does the governor wish to mandate license replacement, he proposes yet another cost to do so. We are sending a message to Albany that we are strongly opposed to this unnecessary and inconvenient fee.”

Legislator Dixon said, “If new license plates are considered necessary, Governor Cuomo shouldn’t be reaching into taxpayers’ pockets. My colleagues and I are calling on the governor to waive the fee instead of nickel-and-diming the hard working residents of New York State.”

Legislator Mills said, “I’d like to thank our state representatives who have been vocally opposed to this issue and strongly support pressuring the governor to waive the fee. It is a shame that Governor Cuomo continues to punish New York State residents who already face some of the highest taxes in the country.”
