Reminding Individuals to Renew Boat Registration at Local Auto Bureau

Erie County, NY- The Erie County Clerk’s Office announced that the New York State Boater’s Guide is now available through their Office. The guide provides a summary of important laws, registration and training requirements, along with suggested safety information governing recreational boating within New York State.

In 2014 New York State amended their guidelines and now requires all persons born on or after May 1, 1996 who operates a motorboat and all personal watercraft operators to successfully complete a State approved 8-hour boater education classroom course and proctored exam.

The Clerk’s Office is also reminding new and existing boat owners take time to register your watercraft and trailer at any of the 6 area Auto Bureau offices in order to help to keep a portion of registration fees in Erie County.

State law requires that any boat motor-driven, operated on NYS waters must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Proof of identity, date of birth and proof of ownership are required to register a boat.   For additional information, please contact the Erie County Auto Bureau Call Center at 716-858-7450 or visit us at www.erie.gov/clerk/autobureau.

The Boater’s Safety Guide is available by request.  Please contact the Erie County Clerk’s Office at 716-858-8866 or e-mail ErieCountyClerkOffice@erie.gov to obtain your free copy.
