It is important that government performs its duties in compliance with laws, policies, established procedures, and sound management practices. Equally important is accountability for the use of public funds. Recognizing these principles, the County Charter established and maintains the County Audit Division within the Comptroller’s Office.
The Audit Division consists of the deputy comptroller-Audit and 6 auditor positions (reduced from 20 staffers in the late 1980s). This division is shaped into an Inspector General-style organization that stops and prevents waste, fraud and abuse of county taxpayers’ dollars. Since 2007, the Division has conducted more than 60 audits and reviews of Erie County’s departments, related entities and issues facing residence, which have identified more than $30 million in cost savings, including approximately $6 million this year alone.
