COMPTROLLER MYCHAJLIW EARNS NATIONAL ACCOUNTING AWARD FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW

Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw is the only Erie County Comptroller to ever earn this prestigious national award for financial reporting

(Buffalo, NY) – For the third straight year, Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw won a national award from the Government Finance Officers Association (G.F.O.A.) for producing a public report that compiles the County’s finances in an easy to read format.  The G.F.O.A. honored Comptroller Mychajliw with their national “Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting (P.A.F.R.).”

This is the foundation of Comptroller Mychajliw’s commitment to increasing citizen’s access to information and accountability in government.  Additionally, the Comptroller has launched the Taxpayer’s Checkbook, Taxpayer’s Credit Card and public reports on salaries.

No other Erie County Comptroller has ever won this prestigious honor for giving taxpayers a better idea of how the politicians spend their hard earned money.

Comptroller Mychajliw and Office of Erie County Comptroller staff broke down complex county finances and produced an easy to understand analysis for the fiscal year that ended 2015.

“Taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent by politicians.  Government works best for the taxpayers we serve when business is done in an open, honest and transparent manner. Families need to know how much of their tax dollars are spent running county government.  My mission is to strengthen accountability on how the budget works and what is spent on it,” said Comptroller Mychajliw.

“I am proud our office earned this award for the third year in a row. As part of my good government initiatives, I produced an easy to understand version of financial statements.  That way taxpayers have a better idea on how their money is spent,” added Comptroller Mychajliw.

The P.A.F.R. is an eight-page report that breaks down the county’s overall $1.7 billion finances.  It is available online at the Office of Erie County Comptroller’s page on the county website: www.erie.gov/comptroller.

“The team I built, of dedicated workers in my office, deserves the accolades. Day in and day out, they work tirelessly for taxpayers. Many thanks to our team in our Accounting Division, under the leadership of Deputy Comptroller for Accounting Greg G. Gach, for their help creating our PAFR.  They make it possible to track and report on County finances in a timely and accurate manner,” added Comptroller Mychajliw.

Comptroller Mychajliw will distribute the P.A.F.R. to community leaders and elected officials. Businesses visited during tours across Erie County will also receive a copy of the report.

In December 2016, Comptroller Mychajliw was also honored nationally by the G.F.O.A. for excellence in financial reporting. The Office of Erie County Comptroller was awarded its “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (C.A.F.R.).” Their “Certificate of Achievement” is the highest form of recognition for government accounting and financial management.
