COMPTROLLER MYCHAJLIW RELEASES STATEMENT

ON ADOPTED 2019 ERIE COUNTY BUDGET

Erie County Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw’s statement:

“The typical politicians in Erie County missed a great opportunity to provide real tax relief to hard working taxpayers.  Struggling families deserve a break from government that has no problem picking their pockets for higher taxes.

I’m disappointed in the County Executive and especially Legislator Hardwick, who did not cut taxes enough when he had the chance to do so.  This is ‘bi-partisanship’ at its worst.

Democrats and a Republican met behind closed doors to reverse the course on an already approved amended budget that cut taxes to continue the status quo of increased government spending. What good is cutting secretive, backroom deals between Democrats and Republicans if in the end, taxpayers are hurt?

County Executive Poloncarz and the Legislature’s majority, aided by Legislator Hardwick, missed a real opportunity to deliver tax relief.

Right now, the county is so flush with cash that County Executive Poloncarz did not charge county employees their required contribution for healthcare plans for the month of December.  Folks in the private sector don’t have this kind of luxury.

It is just one example of how out of touch this county has gotten from those it is supposed to serve.  People at home are paying the most they ever have for lesser quality healthcare.  They can’t afford it.  Contrast that reality with the actions of the Legislature and what you have is insulting.

Legislator Hardwick and the County Executive missed a real opportunity to relate to taxpayers and put money we took from them that we don’t need back in their pockets.  What a shame.”
