Blue Courage Academy

(Blue Courage Train the Trainer and Master Instructor Course)

December 5 - 9, 2016

The majority of law enforcement training focuses on skill development – which is good and must continue as we need highly skilled officers. However, there must also be a balance of skill development with human development that focuses on the person who wears the uniform. Providing law enforcement with the practices, tools and processes to not just survive during their law enforcement career but to thrive is critical.

To address this need the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in collaboration with the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) and the Blue Courage Team is pleased to announce the availability of two sessions of the Blue Courage Academy training. The trainings will be conducted in the following locations:

November 7-11, 2016 in Onondaga County

December 5-9, 2016 in Erie County

The Blue Courage program seeks to enhance a law enforcement officers’ capacity to serve with courage and honor by shaping their human development – the heart and mind. The stress, the pressures, the dark side of life law enforcement often sees, all has influence on the human development of an officer to a high degree – Blue Courage will teach officers to take charge of, manage and control those influences. It addresses many of the personal challenges officers face such as cynicism, identity, judgment, integrity, leadership and stress management and ways to mitigate these challenges. It also provides officers with best practices they can utilize to be able to perform at peak levels, remain resilient and healthy and serve in their profession successfully.

The free five-day Blue Courage Academy sessions being offered will equip participants with the facilitation tools and guidance needed to instruct the Blue Courage program at their respective agencies and academies. The first two days of training will consist of the “Blue Courage: The Heart and Mind of the Guardian” in-service training which attendees will be learning to instruct. On days three and four attendees will learn the instructional techniques needed to deliver this in-service training and practice those techniques during teach back sessions to further their proficiency in delivering the Blue Courage training. The fifth day of the Blue Courage Academy is the master instructor component of the training and is optional. Participants selected by their agency to attend the fifth day to become Blue Courage Master Instructors will be able to conduct the Blue Courage Academy locally to create an additional cadre of Blue Courage instructors.

Officers selected by their agency to attend the Blue Courage Academy and Master Instructor programs must have a strong desire to participate in one or both of these trainings, be committed to furthering this program within their agency, possess the skills and rapport with members of their agency and community to foster healthy relationships and community interactions and be a Municipal Police Training Council General Topics Instructor.

Pre-Registration is required. We expect a lot of interest, and seats are limited. All interested parties must register by close of business October 19, 2016 for both sessions of training. Please indicate on the registration form whether you will be attending the Master Instructor component of the Blue Courage Academy.
