Cell Phone Investigations

October 22, 2015

The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety in conjuction with the New York State Police are pleased to announce the additional availability of a new and contemporary course entitled "Cellular Phone Investigations". In the world of rapidly changing technology, police agencies are in a constant battle to utilize technology as an investigative tool. The goal of this training is to make officers aware of how to preserve, collect, package and utilize any and all data extracted by a trained forensic examiner - from a legally obtained cell phone - for investigative purposes.  Cell phones are capable of storing a wealth of personal informaiton, often intentionally, and sometimes unintentionally that can provide investigative value.  This holds true for almost all mobile devices, such as PDA's and iPhones as well.  By understanding the types of data a cell phone may store and how to collect and preserve for later forensic examination by a trained examiner, it will enhance law enforcement's ability to solve investigations using today's technology.

Course Topics:

  • Evidentiary value of cell phone data
  • Securing digital evidence from being remotely wiped
  • Types of forensic cell phone examination that can be performed by trained examiners
  • Cell phone legal issues
  • Utilizing legally abstracted data to enhance an investigation
  • Call Detail Recording Mapping (CDR)
  • Mobile Remote Deposit Capture (mRDC)
  • Case studies and practical exercise (including a Mobile Hacking Demonstration)

The class size of this course will be limited due to the hands-on practical exercises that is a component of this training; therefore, DCJS will be offering three sessions of this training to accommodate as many agencies as possible.
