DV Instructor Course

June 6 - 7, 2018

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Course Description:

The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) has updated and improved the domestic violence training course materials for recruit officers as a part of the mandated Basic Course for Police Officers (BCPO) training.  Using adult learning theory and realistic training scenarios, newly appointed officers will be better able to implement the professional responses your agency expects.

The training course was developed with experts in the law enforcement field and in consultation with advocates and non-governmental service providers.  It reflects the best practices in holding offenders accountable for criminal conduct, as well as providing victims needed services.  Training was developed with assistance from numerous police officers with expertise in responding to DV calls.  Representatives from several large and small police departments, including the New York City Police Department and the New York State Police, and agencies recommended by the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police and the New York State Sheriff's Association assisted and reviewed each training lesson.  The training reflects the latest in legislative developments, the amended Domestic Incident Report (DIR) and newly developed training in handling officer involved domestic violence calls where wither the offender or the victim could be a law enforcement officer.  In short, we are recommending you consider this course as worthwhile for your in-service instructors to attend.
