Firearms Instructor Course

The Law Enforcement Training Academy will be conducting the NY DCJS Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor Course on September 13 - 24, 2021 from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at the Hamburg Police outdoor range. Those candidates who have successfully passed the previously announced pre-qual course will be invited to continue to the Firearms Instructor Course.
Besides having passed the pre-qual course, candidates must have at least three years full time employment as a police officer or peace officer. Candidates must have also gone through and successfully completed the NY DCJS IDS. If a candidate has not gone through IDS, he/she must get prior permission from DCJS to go through the firearms instructor course, however, they will not be certified as a firearms instructor until they complete IDS.
Covid guidelines:
- No more than 6 participants will be at each indoor range. They will stand approximately 30 feet apart facing downrange in the same direction.
- Participants as well as instructors will wear a mask.
- Department duty weapon, with at least 1500 rounds of jacketed ammunition:
- Duty weapon will be the model used by the patrol officers of the agency. If the instructor candidate is assigned to a detective division or is a police administrator who is assigned a "baby Glock", or a SWAT officer assigned a different model, he/she must come to this course with the model that is assigned to the patrol's division.
- 38 cal. or .357 4 or 6 inch revolver, with 50 Rds. of .38 cal ammunition.
- Police shotgun, with 20 rounds each of 00 buck and slugs.
- AR type .223 carbine, with 60 rounds rifle ammunition.
- 20 Rds. of Dummy ammunition for Duty handgun
- 50 Rds. 9mm Force-On-Force non-marking cartridges, 50 rds. Blank cartridges - available thru polieammo.com or AmChar 585-328-3951*
- Flashlight, whistle and stopwatch (NOT cell phone stopwatch)
- Body armor
- Duty belt and holster / 4 magazines / magazine pouches / eye & ear protection**
- Baseball cap (optional but recommended)
- Personal/appropriate cleaning kit for handgun
- Writing material for notes, a flash drive for your presentations
