UPDATE: A jury found Casado not guilty following a trial in October 2021.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that on March 6, 2019, a bail hearing was conducted in the case of the People v. Shane Casado.

It is alleged that during the late evening on November 27, 2018, the defendant fatally shot his former girlfriend 22 year-old Rachael Wierzbicki outside a home on Edson Street in the City of Buffalo.

Casado was arrested and subsequently arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge Betty Calvo-Torres on November 28, 2018, and was remanded without bail.

The defendant was indicted on Murder in the Second Degree and arraigned on February 1, 2019 before Judge John L. Michalski.  He was again remanded without bail at that time.  At arraignment, the defense attorney stated that he would ask for a future bail hearing.  That bail hearing was conducted yesterday, March 6, 2019.

Both sides were heard at the bail hearing.  Over the District Attorney’s Office strenuous objection to any modification of bail, Judge Michalski granted $175,000 bail cash or bond.  Unfortunately, the defendant posted bail yesterday afternoon.

The next court date is March 15, 2019 for further proceedings.  DA Flynn is available for questions at this afternoon’s Crime Stoppers press conference at ECMC.
