Threatening Social Media Posts Result in a Felony Charge for Two Individuals

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that two people were arraigned in Buffalo City Court over the weekend for posting threatening messages on Facebook in separate incidents.

On Saturday, June 2, a 17-year-old male was arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge Diane Wray on one count of Making a Terroristic Threat.

The defendant allegedly created a fake Facebook account and posted a threat toward Hutchinson Central Technical High School, which resulted in a lockdown of the school on Friday.

The defendant is being held on $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to return for further proceedings on Wednesday, June 6 before Buffalo City Court Judge Amy Martoche.

If convicted on the charge, the teen faces a maximum of 7 years in prison.

On Sunday, June 3, 40-year-old Rosalyn Colligan of Buffalo was arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge Diane Wray on one count of Making a Terroristic Threat.

The defendant allegedly posted numerous threatening messages, targeting the Buffalo Pride Parade, on a Facebook page under a different name.

The defendant is being held on $100,000 bail. She is scheduled to return for further proceedings on Friday, June 8 before Buffalo City Court Judge Amy Martoche.

If convicted on the charge, Colligan faces a maximum of 7 years in prison.

“Threatening messages posted on social media will not be tolerated,” said DA Flynn. “They will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted by my office.”

As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
