Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 54-year-old Matthew Schunk of Town of Tonawanda has been sentenced by Erie County Court Judge Kenneth F. Case to 5 years in prison followed by 2 ½ years of post-release supervision.

The defendant admitted to kidnapping 23-year-old Jonathan Grumble of Buffalo. The victim’s body was found on May 20, 2017 in a vacant lot near the intersection of Quincy Street and Ashley Street in the City of Buffalo.

In April 2018, Schunk pleaded guilty to one count of Kidnapping in the Second Degree, a Class “B” felony. 

DA Flynn commends the Buffalo Police Department Homicide Squad, including Detectives John Garcia, Reginald Minor, Antonio Borrelli, Detective Sgt. William Cooley, and retired Detective Dan Redmond.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christine M. Garvey of the Homicide Bureau, Assistant District Attorney Danielle D’Abate of the Special Projects/Training Bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Lauren Nash of the Tactical Prosecution Unit.
