Residence Requirements:

THIS EXAMINATION IS OPEN TO ALL QUALIFIED EMPLOYEES OF THE ERIE COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER CORPORATION.  At present there is one vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center.

 The duration of all promotional eligible lists is four years from date of establishment unless otherwise indicated.

Examples of Duties:

An Anatomic Pathology Assistant assists pathologists and histotechnologists with various required functions of Anatomic Pathology Division of the Laboratory at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 

Assists Histotechnologist, Chief Histotechnologist and/or Pathologist in laboratory activities;

Performs gross dissection activities, Histology and Cytology processing and assists in processing in surgical pathology suites; Assists with frozen sections;

Performs all functions required to prepare and document samples for examination, grossing and transportation, including order entry;

Maintains specimen tracking procedures based on accessioning specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) using appropriate procedures;

Performs gross descriptions/dissection of specimens;

Maintains, repairs and cleans laboratory equipment and pathology work areas, including the grossing and frozen section rooms;

Stores, retrieves and appropriately discards or transports specimens;

Maintains appropriate department documentation;

Utilizes PC based applications to perform all laboratory functions and section competencies;

Maintains a safe, clean, well-stocked and orderly work environment;

Attends continuing education programs

Qualifications:

QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE FOR TAKING THE TEST: Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class and must be serving and have served continuously on a permanent or contingent permanent basis in the competitive  *or non-competitive class for *24 months  (DELETE:12 months) immediately preceding the date of the written test in a Job Grade V or VI Laboratory-related position plus the following: 

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology or related field which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State’s Education Law and Subpart 79-15 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education

B) Completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours with a minimum of twenty-four(24) semester credit hours in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology or related field which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State’s Education Law and Subpart-79-15 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education

C) Possession of a Clinical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist License as issued by the New York State Department of Education. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Eligibility for licensure or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Technologist, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist at time of application; and

Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Technologist, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist at time of appointment; and

Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Technologist, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist at time of permanent appointment.

NOTES: 1. Must be available for on-call pager coverage as needed.  2. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements. 3. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of examination: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Evaluating conclusions in light of known facts

These questions will consist of a set of facts and a conclusion. You must decide if the conclusion is proved by the facts, disproved by the facts or if the facts are not sufficient to prove or disprove the conclusion. The questions will not be specific to a particular field.

2. General laboratory principles and practices

These questions test for knowledge of such areas as care and handling of toxic/dangerous materials; simple first aid and safety procedures; the metric system; simple laboratory calculations; care and use of laboratory glassware and equipment; and common laboratory procedures.

3. Basic human anatomy and physiology

These questions test for knowledge of basic human anatomy and physiology relevant for a forensic setting and may include the location and function of various organs and anatomical features and anatomical terms.

4. Record keeping

These questions test for accuracy and attention to detail in keeping laboratory test records. The candidate will be asked to transfer information from laboratory test request forms onto a test log form, and then to locate and interpret required information from the test log form. No knowledge of any particular record-keeping system is required.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.

INFORMATION FOR PROMOTION CANDIDATES

Unless otherwise indicated, the eligible list resulting from this examination will have a duration of four years and will not supersede existing promotional lists, if any.

RATINGS REQUIRED:  Test is rated on a scale of 100 with a passing mark at 70.  Test instructions may further divide the tests into parts and set minimum standards for each part.

Points will be added to scores of candidates who achieve a passing mark as follows: Seniority:  For each year of service in the classified service:

VETERANS:  Disabled and non-disabled veterans as defined in Section 85, New York State Civil Service Law, will have 5 and 2.5 points, respectively added to their earned scores if successful in the examination.  You must claim these credits when you file application but you have an option to waive them any time prior to appointment.  If you have already used these credits for a permanent position in NYS, you may not claim them again.
