Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. Preference may be given to successful candidates who have been residents of the municipality in which the appointment is to be made for one month preceding the date of the certification of the eligible list and who are residents of the municipality at the time of appointment. Non-residents may be required to become a resident of the appointing municipality if local law so states.

There is one current vacancy in the Town of Amherst.   The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill this vacancy and other appropriate vacancies which may occur in municipalities or districts under the jurisdiction of Erie County Civil Service while this list is active.

Examples of Duties: An Assistant Electronics Technician - Wastewater Facilities assists in the design, development, operation and maintenance of scientific, electronic and other electrical equipment used at wastewater treatment plants and pump stations; Assists in maintenance and repairs of such machines as generators, motors, voltmeters, oscillators, digital computer trainers, logic stimulator demonstrators, FSK Tone Equipment, radio transmission equipment, variable and constant speed pump drive controllers, flow meters, recorders, process controllers, industrial controls and computers; Assists in the inventory of all equipment; Assist in the design, fabrication and assembly of various types of tools or equipment for use in electrical technology testing; Assists in testing new equipment for accuracy in operation and adjustment or calibration; Assists in diagnosing problems in electronic and electrical circuits and repairs; Assists in assembling purchased equipment and assists setting in place; Assists in maintaining inventory of equipment and tools and requisitions supplies, as required; Assists in the operation and maintenance of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) network, assisting in troubleshooting, repair, expansion and system optimization; Assists in the designing, fabricating and assembling of various types of tools and equipment for use in water pollution control; Utilizes computer software such as word processing, spreadsheet and database applications; Performs data entry.

Qualifications: Candidates must meet one of the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written test: A.) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college or university with an Associate’s degree in electronics or; B.) Graduation from a vocational school with a degree in electronics, or an electrical- related field of study or; C.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma or apprenticeship program, and two years of satisfactory experience in the maintenance, repair and fabrication of electronic equipment; or: D.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) (B) and (C).

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements. 2. Your degree and/or col1ege credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Subjects of Examination: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas: 1. Basic Electronics, Including Electrical And Electronic Circuitry, Schematics And Wiring Diagrams: These questions test for knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices involved in basic electronics, including electrical and electronic circuitry, schematics, and wiring diagrams; and may include such areas as the concepts of voltage, current, and resistance; the identification and function of circuit and solid state components; and the ability to interpret electrical and electronic schematics and wiring diagrams. 2. Use Of Electronic Test Equipment: These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the use of electronic test equipment, including identification and proper selection of electronic test equipment. 3. Repair, Maintenance, And Operating Characteristics Of Electronic Equipment: These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics, proper maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic equipment. 4. Operation, Maintenance & Repair Of Equipment Used In Instrumentation, Including Meters, Sensors, Indicators, Recorders And Data Acquisition Equipment: These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment used in electronic instrumentation, including meters, sensors, indicators, recorders, and data acquisition equipment. Topics covered will include equipment identification, selection, measurement, maintenance, and data interpretation. 5. Mechanical, Electrical And Pneumatic Principles: These questions test for knowledge of the basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic principles involved in the operation of electro-mechanical instrumentation and control systems. NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.
