Assistant Supervisor of Cleaning Services

Residence Requirements:

THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. There is one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

Examples of Duties:

An Assistant Supervisor of Cleaning Services manages several support service activities in a large county institution or the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 

Supervises the cleaning of institutional buildings, the flow of soiled and clean linen, transport, dispatch and bed discharging processes and mailroom operations;

Supervises the work of cleaning service, laundry, transport and dispatch and mailroom personnel including developing schedules, inspecting completed work for quality and quantity, reviewing attendance records,
maintaining coverage of staff for work schedules and special assignments;

Assists in programs of in-service training for cleaning and support service employees to provide better quality services;

Evaluates effectiveness of programs and makes recommendations to revise methods and techniques;

Evaluates new cleaning methods and equipment, and experiments with these for department improvements;

Requisitions all supplies from the institutions' storeroom and assists in their distribution;

Assists in preparing department budget requests for supplies, equipment and personnel;

Prepares employee accident reports, evaluations and various other department operating forms;

Attends and participates in department and other institutional meetings for improvement of all cleaning and support service functions;

Schedules the operation of a Pest Control Program.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test: 

A) Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and four (4) years of cleaning services, sanitation or laundry operations experience, three (3) years of which were in the management and direction of such services in an institutional setting; or:

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of cleaning services, sanitation or laundry operations experience, three (3) years of which were in the management and direction of such services in an institutional setting; or:

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Notes:

NOTES: 1. *Management Experience is defined as overall direction of a Cleaning or Support Services Unit which included scheduling, employee evaluations, and development of cleaning or process improvement strategies for the unit.2. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements. 3. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas: 

1. Ability to read and follow written instructions

These questions test for the ability to read, understand and apply written instructions for performing tasks similar to those encountered on the job. All the information needed to answer these questions will be provided in the test booklet.

2. Building cleaning

These questions test for knowledge of basic principles and practices of building cleaning. They cover such areas as equipment, tools, supplies, methods and procedures for cleaning different types of surfaces and materials under various, commonly occurring circumstances.

3. Supervision and training

These questions test for the knowledge required by a supervisor to set goals, plan and organize work, train workers in how to do their jobs, and direct workers towards meeting established goals. The supervisory questions cover such areas as assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, maintaining work quality, motivating employees, increasing efficiency, and dealing with problems that may arise on the job. The training questions cover such areas as determining the necessity for training, selecting appropriate training methods, and evaluating the effectiveness of training.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
