Residence Requirements:

THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. There is one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. 

Examples of Duties:

Clerk sorts, indexes and files mail, bills, requisitions, ledger cards, and other material alphabetically and numerically;

Pulls material from files, makes file searches, maintains charge-out records and file cards;

Checks reports and records for accuracy and completeness;

Answers telephone and gives out information;

Operates office machines;

Makes entries on cards, bills or in ledgers from original sources;

Assists in the preparation of payrolls and maintenance of time cards;

Opens, time-stamps, sorts, and distributes mail;

Operates a telephone;

Makes simple arithmetic computations;

Gives directional information;

Utilizes enhanced computer systems and equipment in the completion of assigned clerical tasks.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

Notes:

1. Office clerical experience may be substituted for high school graduation on a year for year basis; 

2. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

Candidates not having access to a computer or the internet may request copy of the test guide from the municipal civil service office conducting this examination using the contact information found elsewhere on this announcement.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:

1. ALPHABETIZING - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to file material accurately in alphabetic order.

2. RECORDKEEPING - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to perform common record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents.

3. CLERICAL OPERATIONS, WITH LETTERS & NUMBERS - These questions are designed to test a candidate's visual perception and basic clerical accuracy in working with alphanumeric characters. The candidate is required to read, compare, check, reorder, and count letters and numbers following specific directions for each question. Knowledge of the alphabet and the ability to count are required.

4. SPELLING - These questions are designed to test the candidate's ability to spell words that office employees might encounter in their daily work.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", "Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.

A $15.00 filing fee is required for this exam. The required fee must accompany your application. Send or bring check or money order made payable to Erie County Personnel Department and write the examination number(s) on your check or money order. Do not send or bring cash, as the County cannot be responsible for cash payment. As no refund will be made, you are urged to compare your qualifications carefully with the requirements for admission and file only for those examinations for which you are clearly qualified.
