Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION.  There are sixteen vacancies at the Erie County Medical Center. 

Examples of Duties:

Community Mental Health Technician (Behavioral Health) provides direct nursing care to psychiatric patients in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) and in-patient behavioral health unit at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 
Provides personal hygiene including, but not limited to showers, bed baths, shaving, nail care, hair care, oral care and denture care;
Cares for personal need items such as eyeglasses, hearing aide, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices;
Assists patients in meeting nutritional needs including passing and collecting diet trays and nourishments, setting up trays and adaptive feeding equipment and feeding or assisting as necessary;
Monitors, documents and reports intake and output (I&O);
Performs specimen collection, 12 Lead ECG and glucose level testing utilizing a glucometer;
Obtains vital signs and notifies supervisor of changes;
Leads patient activity group under the direct supervision of a RN;
Transfers and transports patients utilizing appropriate equipment;
Performs range of motion (ROM) for both upper and lower extremities; assists with ambulation;
Identifies changes in condition of skin, cognitive functioning or behavior and notifies supervisor;
Responds appropriately to life threatening emergencies;
Monitors stock supplies and notifies supervisor to order replacements;
Maintains a clean unit environment. 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test: 
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years of experience in in-patient or outpatient behavioral health care.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent must complete Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations (PMCS) yearly.

NOTE1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of examination: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Basic medical procedures

These questions test for knowledge of basic medical procedures. Questions may cover such topics as checking vital signs; normal findings for vital signs; what constitutes a medical emergency; emergency first aid for shock, choking, bleeding, seizures, heart attack, burns; etc.

2. Medical terminology

These questions test for knowledge of words, phrases, and abbreviations used in medical diagnosis and therapy. Questions may cover such topics as diseases, symptoms, pharmaceuticals, medical specialties, anatomy, treatment modalities, medical supplies, and medical equipment. Prefixes and suffixes used in medical terminology may also be included.

3. Understanding and interpreting written material

These questions test how well you comprehend written material. You will be provided with brief reading selections and will be asked questions about the selections. All the information required to answer the questions will be presented in the selections; you will not be required to have any special knowledge relating to the subject areas of the selections. 

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
