Community Resource Technician-Adult Protective Services

Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There are two vacancies at the Erie County Department of Social Services.  

Examples of Duties:

A Community Resource Technician-Adult Protective Services  obtains home care and day care services for adult clients and maintaining supporting document; 

Contacts provider agencies to order personal care, health and mental disability services, and other service needs;

Investigates and resolves service problems including billing;

Processes utility disconnection notices and other matters to support residential needs;

Enters data for staff and provider agencies when necessary;

Maintains a file of confidential client information;

Generates reports requested by management; Composes and types correspondence on word processor;

Develops and implements various projects at the request of Supervisor;

Searches files and other sources for information and data;

Maintains schedule of worker case activity due; Coordinates clients in need of services with availability of services;

Handles routine problems and occasional client emergencies in consultation with supervisory staff;

Provides services at community-based sites, may include evenings or weekends;

Responds to written correspondence and telephone inquires;

Takes photo ID card pictures at the Rath Building and in the community;

Develops and maintains minimum data base for various programs;

Conducts home visits, as needed;

Prepares case assessments for review by supervisor, including recommendation to services required to meet immediate needs and defined goals;

Documents interactions with clients and children, collateral information on cases and performs written work as directed.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test: 

Completion of a minimum of sixty (60) semester credit hours at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and two (2) years of work experience in dealing with the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for a New York State driver license at the time of application. Possession of the license and use of a private automobile required at time of appointment and throughout period of employment.

NOTES: . 1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements. 2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas: 

1. Applying information

These questions test for the ability to apply simple information. You will be given a Resource Directory that describes community agencies, their purposes and the type of client each serves. Questions describe clients with a variety of problems and situations. You must determine the appropriate referral for clients based on the services which each agency provides.

2. Interviewing

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in obtaining information from individuals through structured conversations. These questions require you to apply the principles, practices, and techniques of effective interviewing to hypothetical interviewing situations. Included are questions that present a problem arising from an interviewing situation, and you must choose the most appropriate course of action to take.

3. Office record keeping

These questions test your ability to perform common office record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.

4. Working with people in human services situations

These questions test for a knowledge of general techniques used to deal with common client behaviors such as fear, hostility, shyness, resistance, defensiveness, withdrawal, anxiety and confusion.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.

A $20.00 filing fee is required for this exam. The required fee must accompany your application. Send or bring check or money order made payable to Erie County Personnel Department and write the examination number(s) on your check or money order. Do not send or bring cash, as the County cannot be responsible for cash payment.
