Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There is one vacancy at the Erie County Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). 

Examples of Duties:

Coordinator-Advanced Life Support Systems assists area hospital and ambulance services in the development, implementation and coordination of advanced life support/paramedic programs; 

Develops and coordinates basis pre-hospital emergency medical care training programs, including the following: EMT (emergency medical technician), EMT-Refresher, CFR (Certified First Responder), and CFR-Refresher classes;

Assists area hospital and ambulance services in the development of advanced life support/paramedic programs;

Assists operational advanced life support/paramedic units in implementing standards to facilitate a County-wide ALS system;

Coordinates the emergency medical services communication system (MERS) on a routine basis and in time of actual potential disaster situations;

Serves on Advanced Life Support advisory committees and acts as a liaison between county hospital administration and operational advanced life support/paramedic units receiving medical direction;

Assists area emergency health care agencies in the development and testing of disaster plans;

Provides public education as to the resources available for advanced life support/paramedic services;

Assists in the development of department training budgets, including supplies and materials and the allocation of resources and monitoring of training funds to ensure adequate and effective training is being accomplished;

Prepares reports on program progress and develops statistics as needed;

Assists in the development of policies and standards relating to EMS (Emergency Medical Services) delivery;

Provides information and assistance to interested individuals and groups relating to EMS delivery;

Responds to disaster scenes to assist in coordination of emergency medical resources;

Assists in developing and coordinating specialized training programs for County departments;

Supports the planning and response activities of the Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness;

Assists the SMART (Specialized Medical Assistant Response Team) with education and response activities;

Supports the operations of the County’s disaster field response, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Health Operations Center (HOC);

Renders emergency assistance as necessary.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York state registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) category III/IV Paramedic
experience, at least one (1) year of which included the development, implementation and evaluation of advanced life support; systems; or:

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of AEMT category III/IV Paramedic experience, at least one (1) year of which included the development/implementation and evaluation of advance life support systems; or:

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Candidates must have completed necessary coursework or accepted program and possess a New York State EMTParamedic certification and must be a current New York State Department of Health Bureau of Emergency
Medical Services Certified Instructor/Coordinator.

2. Possession of a New York state driver's license and a car available for use.

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Basic medical procedures

These questions test for knowledge of basic medical procedures. Questions may cover such topics as checking vital signs; normal findings for vital signs; what constitutes a medical emergency; emergency first aid for shock, choking, bleeding, seizures, heart attack, burns; etc.

2. Medical terminology

These questions test for knowledge of words, phrases, and abbreviations used in medical diagnosis and therapy. Questions may cover such topics as diseases, symptoms, pharmaceuticals, medical specialties, anatomy, treatment modalities, medical supplies, and medical equipment. Prefixes and suffixes used in medical terminology may also be included.

3. Understanding and interpreting written material

These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.    

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.
