Residence Requirements:

THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill one vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center.

Examples of Duties:

A Director of Environmental Services plans, organizes and directs functions and activities of the Environmental Services Department at the Erie County Medical Center; Establishes standards of work performance within the department and clean procedures for the Environmental Services staff consistent with established policies of the hospital; Establishes work schedules, assigns hours of work and areas of responsibility to ensure acceptable service for all areas of the facility; Interviews, selects, hires, evaluates, trains, supervises and terminates departmental personnel in accordance with hospital policy; Inspects and evaluates the cleanliness of the hospital; Initiates plant operations work orders for repairs; Makes recommendations to improve sanitation, appearance and efficiency of the hospital; Reports noted unsafe conditions to the Safety Committee; Investigates and evaluates new environmental services supplies and equipment; Ensures that the Bacteriology Laboratory collects, processes, and analyzes microbiological samples from throughout the hospital on a regular basis for the purpose of evaluating housekeeping methods and materials; Establishes and maintains an acceptable Quality Assurance Committee and represents the Department on this Committee; Conducts regular meetings with Environmental Services supervisors, staff and members of other departments; Prepares the annual budget for the Department; Maintains inventory of Environmental Services supplies and equipment.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A) Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and seven years of experience in institutional housekeeping operations, at least of which were in the management of such services; or

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency and nine years experience in institutional housekeeping operations; at least seven years of which were in the management of such services; or

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A and B.

NOTES: 1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements. 2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

 A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Administrative supervision

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in directing the activities of a large subordinate staff, including subordinate supervisors. Questions relate to the personal interactions between an upper level supervisor and his/her subordinate supervisors in the accomplishment of objectives. These questions cover such areas as assigning work to and coordinating the activities of several units, establishing and guiding staff development programs, evaluating the performance of subordinate supervisors, and maintaining relationships with other organizational sections.

2. Administrative techniques and practices

These questions test for a knowledge of management techniques and practices used in directing or assisting in directing a program component or an organizational segment. Questions cover such areas as interpreting policies, making decisions based on the context of the position in the organization, coordinating programs or projects, communicating with employees or the public, planning employee training, and researching and evaluating areas of concern.

3. Building cleaning

These questions test for knowledge of basic principles and practices of building cleaning. They cover such areas as equipment, tools, supplies, methods and procedures for cleaning different types of surfaces and materials under various, commonly occurring circumstances.

4. Preparing written material

These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.

5. Work Planning and Scheduling

These questions test for knowledge of the principles used in developing and implementing work plans and for the ability to arrange work assignments in a manner that will achieve work goals while staying within scheduling criteria. This may include setting up vacation or work schedules, taking into consideration such factors as seniority, work skills, duty hours, and shift coverage. 

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
