RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS:  THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill one vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

A promotion examination will be held at the same time as this examination. The list resulting from the promotion examination will be used first but appointments from this open competitive examination are anticipated. Use of the list may be suspended after it is one year old for any position which it is practical to fill through a new promotion examination.

Examples of Duties:

An Electrical Supervisor supervises and assists in the coordination of preventive maintenance and repair on various electrical systems at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 
Supervises the maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment such as the pneumatic tube vertical transportation (elevators and escalators) and dishwashers;
Advises operating personnel regarding the proper operation of the various systems and monitors adherence to instructions;
Advises regarding modifications, alteration or addition to the above system to provide more efficient, economical or trouble free operation;
Assists in the preparation of detail programs for preventive maintenance of all electrical systems including lighting, power, emergency, monitor, alarm and communication systems;
Plans work; reviews estimates of materials and supplies required; reads and interprets specifications, blueprints, charts and diagrams to determine work required; requests supplies and equipment;
Supervises the inspection of electrical equipment as mandated by the Joint Commission;
Keeps inspection records updated;
Writes specifications and reports as necessary.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A)    Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree or sixty (60) semester credit hours majoring in electrical technologyand five (5) years of experience in the electrical trade, two (2) years of which were in a supervisory capacity; or:

B)    Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma or graduation from a trade school and seven (7) years of experience in the electrical trade two (2) years of which were in a supervisory capacity; or:

C)    An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

NOTES:   1. *Supervision – Responsible direction and control of subordinate employees.  This involves the assignment of work, approval of work, training, evaluation and discipline of employees.  The supervisory aspects must be an integral part of the job, not incidental or occasional.   2.  Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements. 3. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Basic principles of electricity

These questions test for knowledge of basic electrical principles including such areas as electric circuit wiring, grounding and insulation; relationships between voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits; characteristics of direct current and alternating current circuits; and properties of series and parallel electrical circuits.

2. Principles, practices, tools and equipment of the electrical trade

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices of the electrical trade, including such areas as tools and equipment used, proper electrical circuit wiring procedures, and appropriate methods of providing safe, efficient, and effective electrical service.

3. Plans, specifications and wiring diagrams

These questions test for knowledge of the purposes and proper use of various types of electrical system plans, specifications, and wiring diagrams; and for the ability to read and understand electrical system schematics, wiring diagrams, and written specifications.

4. Operation of mechanical and electrical devices

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the use and application of various types of devices used in mechanical work; knowledge of the operation of basic mechanical devices such as gears, pulleys, levers, valves, and similar types of mechanical equipment; knowledge of basic electrical principles and the use and application of equipment and devices used in electrical work; and safe operating practices when working with mechanical and electrical devices.

5. Understanding and interpreting electrical codes

These questions test for the ability to read and understand various electrical codes and electrical installation requirements. Candidates will be presented with written selections containing various electrical code provisions and requirements and will be asked questions based on these reading selections. All the information needed to answer the questions will be presented in the written selections.

6. Supervision

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
