Lead Sterile Processing Technician

Residence Requirements: RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. There are two vacancies at the Erie County Medical Center.

Examples of Duties:

Lead Sterile Processing Technician decontaminates, assembles trays, inspects wraps and sterilizes surgical instruments and medical equipment for the Operating Room, nursing units and ancillary departments at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation;

 Decontaminates and reprocesses surgical instruments and other medical equipment according to prescribed procedures and techniques;

Supervises Sterile Processing Technicians by making assignments, assigning breaks and lunches and orientating new staff;

Assembles trays/sets by using count sheet;

Sterilizes instruments, surgical and house trays and equipment in compliance with policies and procedures;

Ensures trays and/or supplies are wrapped, sterilized and on case carts and ready for delivery;

Ensures trays and/or supplies are delivered in a timely manner;

Utilizes a computer to generate preference cards for setting up case carts, fill out case cart accountability sheets and access various tracking systems;

Performs inventory management, ordering and stocking of supplies;

Receives requests for items and distributes requested items to various locations throughout the hospital;

Assists in keeping the OR and Prep & Pack work areas clean and organized.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and

A.)  Two years of experience as an Operating Room Technician; or:

B.)   One year of sterile processing experience and either:

a.       Possession of a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification as Issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution; or:

b.      Possession of a Certified Registered Central Services Certification as issued by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1.      Arithmetic Computation With Calculator: These questions test for the ability to use a calculator to do basic computations. Questions will involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You may also be asked to calculate averages, to use percents, and to round an answer to the nearest whole number. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.

2.      Keeping Simple Inventory Records: These questions test for the ability to follow instructions in keeping simple inventory records of different materials received and distributed from a central location. The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide will be required. You may have to compute total costs from quantities (number of units) and cost or price per unit. Knowledge of specific record keeping systems and techniques will not be needed.

3.      Name And Number Checking: These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.

4.      Sterilization Of Medical Supplies And Equipment: These questions are designed to test a candidate's knowledge of the theory and practice of the mechanics of sterilization in a medical supply setting. Emphasis is placed on the operation of an autoclave. Other sterilization equipment and agents, checks on the effectiveness of sterilization and proper handling of materials are also covered.

5.      Supervision: These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
