RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There is one vacancy at the Erie County Department of Health.

 

Examples of Duties:

Medical Office Assistant performs clerical and patient oriented clinical duties at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation or Erie County Health Department; 
Greets incoming patients to the department;
Promotes a positive image of assigned department via all point contacts;
Collects patient information such as address, phone number, insurance information, insurance referrals, vital signs, height/weight, reason for visit and pain assessment;
Explains procedures, prepares patient for examination and procedures as directed by the nurse or medical provider;
Collects and labels laboratory specimens;
Performs point of care testing, such as glucometer finger-stick, pregnancy testing and urine testing;
Performs diagnostic screening (EKG, vision testing, etc.);
Schedules patient appointments internally according to site guidelines;
Schedules patient appointments externally (referrals) to other ECMC departments and outside specialist offices, at Erie County Health Department may schedule appointments to other providers;
Maintains patient's medical records and assures security of medical record to maintain confidentiality at all times;
Answers telephone, provides information, records messages, delivers messages (along with patient chart when necessary) to responsible personnel;
Assists in posting charges for patient visits;
Enters diagnostic and procedure codes;
Performs laboratory controls according to policy;
Completes assigned reports;
Assists with physician and administrative typing;
Collects co-payments for services and balances collected monies;
Checks dates and rotates sterilized equipment according to practice standards;
Assists with the stocking of patient rooms with supplies according to PAR lists daily;
Participates in staff development and staff meetings;
Maintains a clean, safe, orderly work area. 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A) Completion of a certificate program at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university or post high school institution with a specialization in Medical Office Assistant which included direct patient care; or:
B) Completion of a certificate program at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university or post high school institution for Nursing Assistant and six months of experience as a Nursing Assistant; or:
C) Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma and one year of experience as a Nursing Assistant or one year of experience as a Medical Office Assistant, both of which included direct patient care and medical office clerical experience.

NOTES:  1.   * Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.   2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices.  A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed.  If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.  You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of examination: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Clerical operations with letters and numbers

These questions test for skills and abilities in clerical operations involving alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting. The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.

2. Name and number checking

These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.

3. Office record keeping

These questions test your ability to perform common office record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.

A $20.00 filing fee is required for this exam. The required fee must accompany your application. Send or bring check or money order made payable to Erie County Personnel Department and write the examination number(s) on your check or money order. Do not send or bring cash, as the County cannot be responsible for cash payment. As no refund will be made, you are urged to compare your qualifications carefully with the requirements for admission and file only for those examinations for which you are clearly qualified.
