Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. At present there is one vacancy at the Erie County Water Authority (ECWA).

Examples of Duties:

A Meter Service Worker completes technical service duties in the field and in the meter shop, consisting of testing, reading, recording, servicing and repairing both residential and commercial water meters;

Reads domestic and commercial water meters;

Investigates complaints of high bills, low pressure;

Operates valves in curb-boxes and meter pits;

Investigates water leaks and waste;

Reports unusual circumstances found related to tampering and defective or damaged meters;

Cleans, repairs, tests and replaces water meters;

Tests and calibrates new and repaired meters;

Operates simple power driven or hand tools in the repair and replacement of defective parts;

Participates in the field testing of commercial water meters as well as in the shop testing of domestic meters;

Computes accuracy of meters during test;

Installs pressure gauges and flow charts for special testing of commercial meters;

Operates service vehicle as required;

Performs related clerical duties, including operation of alpha-numeric computer keyboard;

Acts in the absence of the Senior Meter Service Worker.

Qualifications:

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one year of satisfactory experience in mechanical repairs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid Class D Operator's License issued by the State of New York at time of appointment.

Subjects of Examination:

A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Arithmetic Computations: These questions test for the ability to perform basic mathematical operations and may include solving problems involving computations in such areas as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

2. Meter Reading: These questions test for knowledge of proper meter reading procedures and for the ability to correctly and accurately determine the readings on diagrams of various types of scales, gauges, meters, and dials.

3. Operation And Maintenance Of Mechanical Devices: These questions test for knowledge of the general principles involved in the maintenance of mechanical devices and for the ability to understand the operation of various types of mechanical devices such as gears, pulleys, levers, valves, and similar types of mechanical equipment.

4. Use And Identification Of Tools: These questions test for knowledge of the characteristics and appropriate uses of various types of hand tools and for the ability to properly identify diagrams of various tools.

5. Operation And Servicing Of Water Meters: These questions test for knowledge of the construction and operating characteristics of water meters and the proper procedures to use to service and repair these meters.
