Nurse Practitioner–Orthopedic Services

Residence Requirements:

THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. There is one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

Examples of Duties:

Nurse Practitioner-Orthopedic Services provides expanded orthopedic nursing services to patients at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 

Interviews patients, obtains medical histories and performs comprehensive physical examinations;

Assesses patients who are candidates for surgical interventions;

Assesses patients on a daily basis and documents assessment;

Initiates orders;

Reviews patient testing, interprets results and correlates information with the overall plan of care;

Administers medications;

Assists with discharge process for determining home care and rehabilitation needs and providing instructions of such to patients;

Starts IVs via gravity and infusion pumps;

Evaluates care provided by members of the health care team with respect to the patient’s overall treatment;

Monitors and renders care for those patients with established chronic, stable medical illnesses;

Responds to life threatening emergencies;

Supervises and directs staff;

Acts as a resource person for nursing care problems; makes suggestions and recommendations on nursing care problems;

Serves as a mentor for bedside nursing staff and nursing students;

Attends and participates in meetings, seminars, information sessions and interdisciplinary care conferences;

Maintains records and prepares reports.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before January 9, 2019:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s Degree in Nursing; and either:

A.) One (1) year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in orthopedics; or:
B.) Two (2) years of registered professional nursing experience in critical care.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1) Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment; and:
2) Possession of a current New York State Education Department certification as a Nurse Practitioner to practice in Acute Care or Adult Health at time of appointment; and:
3) Possession of a current Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number issued by the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration at time of appointment; and:
4) Possession of a Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) at time of appointment.

Notes:

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license. Specify the date that your license was first issued.

In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.
